The news the other day asked us to "sign up" for the KWC. How do I do that, just in case there are Sherlock/Firearm/True Crime questions to be answered.....

Drop Suze a message to add you to the group here. Not sure about externally

And in fact, I've just added crissdee to that group since I was here and it's easy to do.
Nothing will happen there for three months or so anyway, but anyone else who wants to be in the KWC Group just needs to shout.

Many thanks. As usual, The Carlton Club will find me. But in case of emergency, there is a private telephone call, XX.31....

I did not understand that you were merely an intermediary. Who is the principal?

Suze, with your great powers you could easily trace my client back through me, but I must ask you, as a point of honour, to refrain from doing so, and not to break in upon his incognito.

Could you add me too please suze?
Going on past experience with the KWQ, I'll have bugger all to add, but it'll be nice to have the option to take a look.

Email addresses.
It looks to me as if the email address I've registered with is visible to other logged-in users. I've looked at a few random other people' profile and they've all had email visible.
There's a setting to restrict to "staff only", and I've got that set - but I don't know if those other users have restricted their profile in the same way. I think I'm always allowed to see my own profile. I'd like to know if my email really is visible, so I'd appreciate it if a couple of (non-privileged) users could click on my profile and tell me if they see an email address, please.
It's not that I'm paranoid (well, just a little bit, maybe). I just prefer my main email address to continue to be private and relatively spam-free. So -- just in case, I've created a brand new email address and changed over to that. :-)
Thanks in advance Dix

I'll take a look into this at the weekend if that is ok?

I've just clicked on a few random profiles, and they all have visible email addresses. (Including what is presumably Dix's new one.)

Thanks, Numerophile. If the email you see has my username as the first part it is the new "throwaway" one. :-)

I have had a look, and it appears to be a “personal preference” in the profiles. It is easy to switch off by editing your profile, then selecting who to share your info with, staff I think are included in all options - I guess that is needed for broadcast messages etc. I’ll log in in a minute and set my barbados account to staff only, if one of the regular non-staffs could take a look and see if they can see my address. I’ll then do a proper announcement and agree a course with Jenny suze and amanda to see how best to advise newcomers of how to hide that info. Thanks for alerting me to it, hopefully we can ensure everyone has their preferred privacy setting mov8ng forward, sorry you had to create a new email just for the forum.

I can see it, barb. Mine's set to "private" too, so if you can see mine there's definitely something afoot.

Problem I have is I’m a staff member so I can see everything, you aren’t though so should only be able to see the ones shared with you.
Hmmmm More thinking needed

Okay, pretty sure I've never looked at any profiles and I can see email addresses on anyone I look at.

It’s a personal privacy setting, so if you look at one that hasn’t switched it off (before you look because of caching) then you will be able to see it. In the “testing” account I checked the barbados and bondee account (both have the privacy set to only staff) I couldn’t see any email, so I switched it off on the testing account before any logged in user could check, so I need to check - if someone else could switch the privacy to only staff in their profile, I will check to see if it hides from new users. Then I’ll check what happens after clearing the cache, and give instructions on that if required.

I think we can safely say that new members can no longer see email addresses. Now to find out why older members can see them

FYI I've had "staff only" set from (probably) day 1. It might have taken me a day or so to find the setting. It's something I'd look for immediately and get set as secure as possible. I feel better having the extra email where my name isn't obvious, actually. Might use it for a few other social things.
The testing email is hidden for me. But you probably don't need to know at this stage.
Thanks,
Dix

Not a problem, it wasn't ok at the beginning, but we could kind of "not mind" because we have pretty much known each other for years, but as new members join privacy is (for want of a better term) more important, so it needed to be taken seriously, and it's the role I took on here when we were losing our "technical" admin - not so much telling you not to post dodgy links I'm hopeful I can get to the bottom of why some can still see email addresses while others cant.
