The American sex therapist Dr Ruth Westheimer, better known as just "Dr Ruth", has died at the age of 96.

The magic community is mourning the loss of Tony "Doc" Shiels, the Cornish magician and artist. A huge name in magic, and one of the founders of what's now known as bizarre magic. I can't say it's shocking, as he was about 85, but it's still a great loss.

My favourite line of his was when dealing with Ms Gue* one of the regular 'ladies' they were always bringing into the station. "I'll give you a freebie if you let me go"

Arguably, ANYONE can marry people. The question is whether the resultant union has any legal validity. This further begs the question as to how necessary said validity is, other than in a few specific circumstances....

Yes captains can legally marry people - my son-in-law's sister's wedding was held on a Cunard ship and she and her husband were married by its captain.

The actor Roberta Taylor - best known as Irene Raymond in Eastenders, and Inspector Gold in The Bill, although I first saw her in Inspector Morse - has died at the age of 76.

Mrs Taylor freely admitted that she was a "dedicated smoker" throughout her adult life, so 76 isn't bad going!  She is survived by her second husband, the actor Peter Guinness.
