Yes I have discovered that one has to be careful with vocabulary, not just the obvious ones like store/shop and trunk/boot. I used the word arrogate recently and was met with blank looks. 60 years ago when my mum's older sister had decided to move to London and start her teaching career, she was met with blank looks from the students when mentioning the shoes then used for sports classes. Here then they were commonly called sandshoes, being used on a tennis court etc.

In Scotland sandshoes/trainers/sneakers in the 1960s were known as gutties, pumps or more formally plimsolls depending on which region you were in.

The plimsolls would be referred to as pumps or gutties, I seem to remember they had a brown sole when I was a kid.

Just had a bowl of Tesco's Malted Wheats. Probably too late to be eating anything, but my stomach growling would keep the whole street awake if I didn't.

Unhealthy day today.
Lunch was a fried egg and chip butty, followed by syrup sponge and custard.

We'll be having American Chop Suey for dinner this evening. Basically beef mince in a generic pasta sauce mixed through cooked macaroni served with a goodly amount of parmesan on top, also hot sauce in my case.

Plimsolls when I was a child. Was momentarily nonplussed when this appeared as the top item on the 'What are eating?' page

Just about to eat some tarragon chicken and rice that I got from the food bank across the river.
Yes, things have got to that point, At least six job applications in hand, hopefully one of them will come to fruition before long...

I have some mushrooms stuffed with breadcrumbs and parmesan that were going as two packs for the price of one at the supermarket on Saturday. I'm going to bake them, and then serve them with orzo and corn kernels I've cut off a corn on the cob. They were going as 5 ears for $2.99 at the supermarket, so we have an odd one out to use.

syrup sponge and custard.
TGH wants to know if that is the old school syrup sponge that comes in a Heinz tin, and if so where did you get it.
It was a bit of a favourite of his in younger days, much as it's "probably horribly bad for you", but he doesn't think they make it any more.

I have very vivid memories of my nan "making" them for me after we'd eaten our Sunday dinner. It seems that they were discontinued earlier this year.
Saturday's was a Mr. Kipling pud. His cakes are exceedingly good, so I thought I'd give his sponges a try. I can't say that it was exceedingly good, but it was very good. A decent substitute for Mr. Heinz's.
I also bought some of his Cherry Bakewell sponge puddings. They, however, are only exceedingly good if you like your puddings to taste incredibly artificial with a hint of plastic. Avoid at all costs.
Bad for you? Probably, but I don't think it really matters as long as you're not eating them every day.

I had garlic bread for breakfast. Thinking about hotdogs later on Garlic?! Bread?!
I had a couple of Domino's garlic doughballs with my breakfast last Wednesday. They were left over from the Tue for Twosday deal that I bought on Twosd... err... Tuesday.
I haven't had hotdogs for ages. You've given me a craving!

I can't work out if you mean garlic bread?, as in, what is it? Or as in, what?. for breakfast? In either case, it's basically just warm bread with garlic on it. Very popular at pizza places usually I have eaten dough balls before. Nice if they are done right And go fourth and eat a hotdog!. lol!

Thanks Bondee. Suitable notes have been made, and I may procure a Mr Kipling syrup sponge next time the good man deserves a special treat!

I did not, in the end, make the orzo thing last night. I came across a recipe for corn fritters, and I used the fresh corn to make them. They were delicious.
I read a recipe for sweet potato gratin today, so I think I might make that for dinner this evening, and serve it with some chicken sausages and either snow peas or broccoli, as the whim takes me at the time.

I ordered a takeaway meal of chicken wings and chips. It was their smallest size, but still big enough for two meals, so tomorrow's dinner is also sorted! Only five wings, but this place uses the entire wing, so one of theirs equals two from most places.
