I seem to remember something on usenet in the late 90s about some ISP's - possibly AOL - filter causing consternation among the punk rock fans of the world. Not only did it block anything about the Sex Pistols1, it also blocked any mention of their record label2, and one of their more popular songs3.
1 Sex, obviously. 2 Virgin Records, again, a word that often appears in searches for pornography. 3 Anarchy in the UK, "extreme" politics.

While my laptop didn't seem affected last Friday at the outage which occurred around 3-4pm originally my time, tonight the Microsoft based solitaire games on the laptop kept shutting down, then other things.
Then I got the blue screen of death.....but it was just the latest update, thankfully.

AOL was renowned for that sort of thing!
A forum aimed at British people who wanted to give up smoking, which banned the word fags. A forum about film musicals which banned both Dick and Dyke. There were others.

Fags was a name of lolly in Australia in the '70's/80's when I was a kid. Came in a little box and were coloured white with a small red dot in the centre of the round end. Due to its likeness to cigarettes and the increased bans on that advertising, it was renamed Fads. Though in my local history groups, very few people who had this lolly remember being drawn to the real item as such.

And every December, junior smokers kits would appear in the shops. They contained cigars, pipes, ashtrays, matches and, of course, cigarettes. Everything the young smoker could possibly need, but made of chocolate.
I don't know why we can't get them anymore.

A chap I was working with in the late 90s had an AOL e-mail address. I sent him a message with "ArsehOLes" in the subject line and it was bounced back to me. I never did find out if it was an overly sensitive filter or some other technical bobbins.

No, but he was a bit of a cu... never mind.
That's a lie for comic effect. He was one of the few genuine people I've ever worked with.

'CU' in the NT' was a catchphrase used by the Northern Territory government here to promote tourism, I've seen tv ads. I'm not sure if they realised what they were actually saying or if it was one of those deliberate things, like the catch phrase years ago for Australia generally uttered by model Lara Bingle 'Where the bloody hell are you?'

I'm sure they knew exactly what they were doing. As I understand it, calling someone a cunt is a term of endearment in Australia. While I'm here, I must mention this recent video from the divine Prof. Hannah Fry.

It's actually the opposite, meaning the rudest form you could imagine. That's what all the kid gangs in my area call out as they rob people. I hear them talking to each other and the more times they can get this word in, makes them cooler.
F--ing cunt' is used in DV by some men.
