Rather productive Saturday all up. Went first to the cash for cans/bottles recycle place, only got $6 but that's about as much as will fit in my shopping jeep plus extra bag.
Then got home to discover my emailed pay slip meaning some money coming Monday afternoon.
Today's weather was nicer than predicted so I went for an extra long walk along a creek path and to the local beach. Bought a lotto scratch ticket on the way home, won $30 on it so went to the hardware/garden place, got another bag of potting mix plus some treats for the cat from a pet supply store.
Then my neighbour calls me over to pay me for the gardening work I did while she was away (repotting the bougainvillea plant). She was expecting to be away another couple of weeks but had problems with getting dialysis times at the Darwin hospital so had to come home early.

A few years ago Firstborn was taken into A&E for an emergency appendectomy. We had to cover an outrageous total of £18 for hospital car parking to visit her during her 3-day stay. Ah, the horrendous burden of socialised medicine... PDR The catchpa tests aren't intended to filter-out the bots; they're intended to exclude cyclists. That's why they ask you to identify the pictures containing traffic lights... PDR How did you get from the cost of medical treatment to captcha tests?
And guess what?... Car drivers ignore red traffic signals too!

So the mystery of the aching and very painful hands, wrists, forearms and upper arms has been solved. All we have to do now is figure out some means of alleviating the pain, and controlling the immune response without screwing over my remaining kidney.

efros - honestly I would highly recommend a couple of capsules a day of resveratrol and of turmeric/cucurmin, plus liquid glucosamine. I honestly believe those have kept my arthritic tendencies in check. I had quite bad arthritis in one knee (visible on X ray) which has cleared up completely since I started doing that. Right now, ten years later, the only arthritic bit is my left lower thumb joint, and that isn't too bad. Lots of arthritis in my family so I knew I was prone to it.

Continuing the medical theme, I am slightly radioactive. About 2 years ago I was having bad gut issues. 18 months ago I had 2 colonoscopies. As part of further investigations I toddled down to Eastbourne hospital and took a capsule. We gave it an hour to dissolve, and the radioactivity to spread and then I got in a scanner which counts the gamma ray output. A week hence I get scanned again, to see how much it has gone down. Amazing technology. Boring screen though just little pixels of light when a burst happened. Looked like a night time snowstorm really. I have not acquired superpowers, and will not glow in the dark tonight. Disappointing.

I remember getting a scan of my transplanted kidney to check it was working. A positive myriad of colours all over the screen, which was apparently just what they were hoping for. Looked cool as well...

I think this may be a database bug. I pressed the quote button on a message, typed my reply and pressed "Create Post". It seems to have put the post in the wrong thread. I wonder if it's something to do with replying to a post in the "recent posts" listing? PDR PS - yes a few do, but nowhere near as frequently as cyclists. Amongst other things many traffic lights have compliance cameras that will catch the transgressing motorist but not the cyclist due to the criminal short-sightedness of failing to require identifying plates (numberplates, QR codes or WHY) on bicycles.

Yesterday, Texan s-in-l and I (slightly assisted by the young lad who's been doing some garden work for me) rejuvenated my wooden benches with a couple of coats of red chestnut fence paint. I was intending to have a go at the matching table on Monday, as they've gone off to a re-enactment event in east Cornwall for the weekend and the table is large (and heavy!). However, I managed to shift it onto some cardboard on the grass (I won't pretend it's a "lawn") and slap paint on it. It keeps looking like it could rain here and I wanted to get it done asap. Now waiting for the second coat on the top to dry, so I can haul i back under the pergola and lose the cardboard. My hands have got a lot of red chestnut paint on them as well - I hope it washes of in the shower before I'm at "work" tomorrow!

Early start this morning. It's 14s birthday so he had a sleepover with a friend last night and then appeared at 06:06 this morning as he wanted to open his presents. He said he'd been awake since 5am and had restrained himself from coming in to us since then. I'm very pleased he did, but could have used another hour or two of restraint. I suspect a nap may be required later today once he's been dispatched to his dad.

I had a headache and fatigue feeling for most of my Sunday, partly caused by possibly doing too much yesterday and partly my body's issues.

Saturday was the deadline for the biggest regular job I do. It takes at least two days to complete, or three is better.
For various reasons I couldn't get solidly to work on it until Friday afternoon, so here we go with crunch time again. I'm NOT going to claim I was awake for 28 hours straight, because there were a few periods where the brain shut down for half an hour or an hour at a time and, for all practical purposes, I was asleep for those times.
Anyway, I got the thing finished and passed back to the editor by Saturday afternoon, then had a six-hour "nap" to repay my Friday night sleep debt. Hung around in my pyjamas for a few hours, had something to eat, then went back to bed again. I'm up now at only a slightly late hour (for me) on Sunday, and I think I deserve to have the day off.

More crossword-related blather.
1) Another somewhat simple clue "NOT (anag)"
2) Two words that I have never come across before. "overage" meaning a surplus, and "ethology" meaning the study of animal behaviour
3) Scanning a map of the constellations in search of another answer, I noticed Draco, Regulus, Bellatrix, Arcturus and Sirius. These may strike a chord with fans of the boy wizard. I also found Aldebaran, which another subset of people may recall.

I was on my train into the city earlier and going well, half way there, just left another station when the train stopped in between stations. I assumed track fault/red signal - if that, the driver may make an announcement. No such thing, so I didn't know. Then we slowly proceeded a bit, and I happened to look out the window then and saw a woman with a toddler beside the track at a place where there is no crossing, they had to have crossed from the park on the other side of the tracks. Not the best thing to be teaching a kid to do!
The two tours went well, an interstate school with two groups booked. Some of the kids were reasonably interested, some knew a bit about the basics of Christianity (their school is what we call a private one, Christian but non-denominational)
One boy from my group bought himself a small silver cross on a chain from the on site shop.

Day 2 of Prednisone yesterday, no hand/arm pain at all. Pity the long term usage of this stuff is not good for you. It really gives you a boost to be pain free for a few days.

"overage" meaning a surplus
That word is mostly used in connexion with the sale of land. If you sell a piece of land to me, and I then sell it on to PDR for more than I paid you, it's not rare for the contract to include a provision that I have to pass some of my profit back to you. How much of the profit is due back to you will be specified in the contract, and the relevant part of the contract is known as the "overage clause".
While we are on English which is perfectly correct, but not in everyday use, in the WFHIT? section tetsabb has given us a link to a piece from The Guardian about Donald Trump. That piece uses the verb to undergird, which means to provide a basis for an assertion. If I were to assert that crissdee is an hairy man*, I might use his beard to undergird this claim. It's a "real verb", albeit not one in common use, although I might question whether the past participle should be undergirded as used in the article or undergirt. I'm sure Amanda of this Parish would be able to confirm that an island nation is girt - not girded - by sea.
* As far as anyone knows, Alan Bennett just made this up. No known edition of The Bible actually uses the <an> form of the indefinite article here.

I doubt whether anything about Donald Trump would be undergirded except his embonpoint (unless we're talking about the evidence for the various criminal charges against him).
My day has started earlier than normal today as I had to pay a visit to the vampire at 8am to have blood drawn because I have to go back to the doctor tomorrow. Last month I had a scary day when my blood pressure shot to frightening heights and I had to go to the doctor, who upped my bp medication. Tomorrow's visit is to check that it has dropped down to a more reasonable level (I know it has because I have blood pressure monitoring equipment at home but they always want to double-check you). I have also had covid and recovered from it in between these two visits so I guess that will need to be discussed as well.

That's odd, I have just been given another bp medication on top of the current two, and I was wondering yesterday when they would be calling me in for a check up....

I know "overage" as a term relating to inventory management and suchlike. A company overestimates the demand for a product, and they end up with an overage of stock.
Specifically, ethology is the study of animal behaviour in the natural habitat, as opposed to laboratory experiments.
----
A medical group I follow on Facebook recently had a chat -- "What's the highest blood pressure you've ever seen?" One reply was, "I never thought I'd see such a look of terror on a doctor's face when he said to the patient, I don't know how high your blood pressure is because the meter only goes to 300."
I've recently had my BP meds tweaked as well, and it seems to have done the trick. Just a tiny change in the dosage, but it must have been enough to push it over the line into effectiveness. My home equipment is suddenly showing nice numbers like 145/75. I still need to schedule the follow-up appointment, though.

'Overage' also has a meaning in transactional terms: if you buy an asset, the seller might say "the price is £X, but if you sell at a profit within 5 years, you have to pay us X% of difference. That payment back to the seller is an overage. It may be that the land is sold cheaply in a hurry or by a local council that does not know what it should be worth for development, and they want to claw back some of what they could have got. Sometimes land is sold for development with a proviso that an overage has to be paid if the buyer applies for planning permission, and it is X% of however much the planning permission increases the value.

She's spent most of the day asleep in her favourite hidey-hole (the spot in the photo) so far.
I don't think she's one for celebration. We'll see if that changes at lunchtime.
