I'm with TGH on this one! Just from context, "S.B.P" was obviously the sheet material with patterns on it. "Sticky tape" would have been used, regardless of commercials, because even then they were only the leading brand, not a monopoly. Many eager makers of useless tat watching the programme would only have some generic stuff from Woolworths or the like...

He's right suze, it was originally meant for covering worktops and shelves I think. I don't think it was an ICI product I think they were an independent company. They are still in business apparently, do a search at your UK version of the rainforest river store for Fablon. Could be a nightmare for the GOP...

Sellotape... Scotch Tape and Durex depending on which English speaking country you are in.

Scotch Tape was the name I grew up with, yes. Still made by the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (3M), while British Sellotape is by now made by Henkel AG in Dunstable.
I'm getting a bit confused about whether Fablon is still available under that name. I see assorted places offering it for sale, but the only company called Fablon that has a website of its own does carpets, not sticky backed plastic. Perhaps Fablon sticky backed plastic is one of those rare brands that doesn't do marketing. The relatively few people who still want it know what it is, and no one else cares.
TGH accepts that it wasn't an ICI product, though. He reckons he was thinking of Savlon, an inferior rival to Dettol which contains the same vowels as Fablon and absolutely was made by ICI. The Savlon brand is by now owned globally by Johnson & Johnson, but in Britain by the German firm STADA. Dettol is still made by Reckitt Benckiser as it has been since 1933.
Just to go full circle, Reckitt Benckiser also now owns the Durex condoms brand, although Durex condoms sold in the UK are made in Thailand these days. Durex sticky tape was in fact a 3M brand, and the name is no longer used in Australia after 3M came to some kind of gentlemen's agreement with Reckitts. 3M sticky tape sold in Australia is by now called Scotch Tape, and Durex is a brand of condom.

Thinking about that stuff gives me PTSD. It was the stuff I had to use to cover my school exercise books and I'd invariably bugger it up and have to look at the resultant mess for the rest of the year.
And thanks to Blue Peter, I can't hear the words "sticky backed plastic" without thinking of Janet Ellis saying "...like so."

Tonight, on my telly at least, there were dark doings amongst the Chinese porcelain in Kingston....

Tonight, on my telly at least, there were dark doings amongst the Chinese porcelain in Kingston.... I bet it was in one of the antique dealers on the Old London Road, near the phone boxes!
(I'm being silly. I'm 95% sure it was a Holmes reference, but to what exactly I have no idea.)

Something that may be of interest to some of us, Sky Arts are showing what they are calling David Baddiel's "Not The" trilogy.
Starting this Saturday, 9th November, they'll show "My Family: Not the Sitcom", followed by "Fame: Not the Musical" on the 16th and "Trolls: Not the Dolls" on the 23rd.

Interesting guests on 'The Last Leg' shortly -- Desired Burch, Anthony Scaramucci, who can be quite funny, and Frankie Boyle, whi, in our opinion, always is. Expect 'strong' language.

Channel 5 has shown 2 episodes of a detective series called Ellis, after its main character, a DCI who appears to have no first name, but claims to have a father and daughter. Very enigmatic. Last night we watched the second episode, in which she investigated shady goings-on in a police station. One of the officers was Detective Constable Thompson, first name Leah. But she was nearly always addressed as 'DC Thompson ' which kept making me think of the Beano...

We watched the second episode of "Until I Kill You" last night, which was very gripping. I can't imagine how awful that must have been for Delia, and there are two more episodes to go so it may get worse yet.
